The 23 teams enjoyed glorious sailing conditions as they competed in 4 races over the two day Legal Cup event.
New for 2014, Class 1 was a matched fleet of Beneteau First 40s, demonstrating the increasing popularity of these boats. Allen & Overy on Tarka II claimed class victory with just 4 points. Stewarts Law and Linklaters both scored 12 points but Stewarts Law took 2nd place on countback, with Linklaters two teams forced to settle for 3rd and 4th places. All three teams improved on their results from 2013!
Class 2 comprised Beneteau 40.7 and other IRC yachts. Mikado, privately owned by a member of the Bar Yacht Club was the clear winner on 6 points, retaining their class-champion crown from last year! 2nd and 3rd places were very close, with Field Fisher Waterhouse on 12 points just pipping Freshfields with 13!
In the matched fleet of Oceanis 37s in Class 3, event sponsor Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management took victory on 9 points, and again 2nd and 3rd places were a tie on 11 points. Herbert Smith were awarded 2nd place on countback, and Sidley Austin took 3rd. Such close racing!
The top 3 teams in each class were awarded a silver trophy and the class winners also took home a bottle of Mount Gay Rum. The Overall Regatta Winners (Mikado) were also presented with a huge trophy, and each crew member received a brand new Nautica Watch.
The evening function was a great event. This year the theme was ‘Rule the Waves’ and the beautifully decorated Cowes Events Centre created a great atmosphere. All he teams made a huge effort with their fancy dress costumes – with teams of Pirates, Sailors and even lobsters roaming the dance floor!
After two days of close racing and fantastic evening entertainment, the event also managed to raise nearly £8,900 for Sail4Cancer, the nominated charity which is an event record! So thank-you to everyone who was involved and we look forward to seeing you again next year! Keep an eye on the event page for 2015 dates!
Mount Gay Rum will be awarded to industry regatta winners.
