![]() ![]() | 9th July 2010 Britannia Corporate Events is proud to support and sponsor the Polypipe Regatta. The 11th annual Polypipe Charity Sailing Regatta was held this year on Thursday 16th July at Port Solent, Hampshire. The Regatta is aimed at non-sailors and experienced sailors alike. The intention is for everyone to experience an enjoyable day on the water with some not too serious racing. Afterwards, during après sail at Port Solent, there will be a raffle to raise money for some worthwhile causes. The day is an excellent opportunity for client entertainment. In 2009 50 yachts entered. For those arriving the night before, there will be a Regatta hog roast held at Portsmouth Harbour Yacht Club in Port Solent (please note that this is chargeable and must be booked through your entry form) followed by a live band. The band will play from 9-10pm and is free to all who wish to attend. The morning of the Regatta starts at 7.45 a.m. with breakfast at the Polypipe marquee next to Portsmouth Harbour Yacht Club. Competitors then make their way to the pontoon where their yachts are moored, get kitted up and have a safety briefing on-board. The next hour and a half is spent learning to sail, remembering how to sail or just practice sailing depending on your abilities! The first race follows; we then have a break for lunch. A second race then takes place and afterwards the fleet returns to the marquee for tea, cakes, prize giving, perhaps the odd beer and the charity raffle. The day is finished by 6.00 p.m. What is it for? In 1998, Steve climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The climb, accompanied by friend and local plumber Richard Gerrans, raised over £25,000 for Steve's nephew William. William is autistic and the money was used for his therapy. Unfortunately, more money was needed for William and Steve looked for a fund-raising mechanism that could be repeated year on year. After rejecting golf days and go-karting events he settled on a Charity Sailing Day, chartered 12 yachts from Sunsail and then found 12 clients to sub charter to. The 12 yachts had an excellent days racing, a raffle raised some more money for William and the Polypipe Regatta was born. Each year, the event attracted more entrants and after 5 years, the 5 teams that had won clubbed together to purchase and donate a solid silver Armada Plate as a suitable winning trophy. The trophy is inscribed 'Williams Trophy' as a reminder of the small child who inspired the event. Steve is particularly grateful for all of the help he receives from his colleagues at Polypipe and realises that they must be very tolerant to put up with him! He would also like to thank in advance all Regatta entrants, the silver and gold sponsors ![]() SOME OF THE BENETEAU 40.7 FLEET RACING Who can take part?
