CHALLENGER (WALES) WINS THE INAUGRAL EUROSAF BENETEAU 40.7 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
24.09.09

First Challenger (Wales) won the Inaugral EUROSAF Beneteau 40.7 European Championships on the weekend of 19-20th September 2009. Challenger's owner Gareth Williams took his team to a convincing win at the Championships, beating stiff competition from 13 teams from 6 nations. Challenger, racing with a Hyde Sails sail wardrobe, won all but 1 of the 4 completed races with an impressive display of sailing in light and tricky conditions.

The top 6 teams and the countries represented were:

1) Challenger [Wales]
2) Addiction [England]
3) Tarka [England]
4) Playing Around [England]
5) Portia [England]
6) Profile [France]

Four of the six scheduled races were staged, with one being lost each day due to light airs. The lights airs made course setting difficult and punished mistakes by teams severly.

Race 1 saw Challenger win a race of less than 1 hour in duration by over 2 minutes, with Guy Prest's Tarka taking 2nd and Peter Robson's Playing Around taking 3rd. With the wind shutting out late on in the race, 4 teams were unable to complete the race within the time limit.

Race 2 saw another impressive win from Challenger, but they were pushed hard by Addiction who took 2nd. Tarka were pushed down into 3rd.

On day 2, the 3rd race in the series saw a repeat of race 1 with 4 teams failing to negotiate the extremely light winds in the allocated time. Challenger won the 3rd race, with Tarka and Addiction taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. Mark Norris' Profile, representing France, scored their highest score of the series with a 4th place after finding a breeze line near the mainland shore as part of some great tactical sailing.

The final race sailed saw breeze filling in to give over 10+ knots for the first time that day and this race saw Playing Around winning the race, followed by Addition and Challenger.

Simon Boulding, Marketing Director with Race Organisers Britannia Corporate Events commented:
"We were delighted with the turnout for this inaugral EUROSAF Beneteau 40.7 Championships. The conditions were frustrating at times for the crews but some fine sailing from Challenger to take the Championships for Wales. We were also delighted to be able to raise in excess of £2,000 for the Docklands Sailing & Watersports Centre."
