The 17th annual Manches Cup took place on the weekend of 20-21 May, with 70 teams from the legal sector battling it out to win the Manches Cup Championship Trophy.

Racing took place over two days in blustery and challenging conditions. Entries included Magic Circle, international, national and regional firms including: Clifford Chance, Linklaters, Allen & Overy, Sherman & Stirling, Manches, Shoosmiths, DWF Solicitors, Slaughter & May and Berwin Leighton Paisner.

The four divisional winners were Ashursts, Shoosmiths Solicitors, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Manches LLP.

As the only team to win all races in their division, the team from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer took the Manches Cup Championship Trophy for the first time in the firm’s history. The Freshfields sailing team, set up four years ago by solicitor Oliver Gayner, has completed various sailing events in recent years including several Manches Cups and the 2005 Rolex Fastnet.

Oliver Gayner comments on his team’s success:
““As a team and as a firm, we were delighted to be the overall winners of the 2006 Manches Cup. The Manches is a great fun regatta, but also there is a high standard of competition and for Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer to come first is something of a rags to riches tale, given that the first time we entered back in 2003 we failed to even cross the start line in time! Since then we have worked hard to raise the profile of sailing within the firm, including providing RYA training for sailors of all levels from beginner to yachtmaster and starting the onshore and offshore racing team, and I think we now have one of the most developed sailing programs of any of the UK law firms. It’s obviously starting to pay off as everyone in the team, from bowman to navigator, were spot on this weekend despite the filthy conditions. We’re already looking forward to coming back to defend our title next year.”

Other prize winners included ABN Amro for the best team of in-house sailors and Slaughter & May for the team raising the most money for the events official charity.
